Physicians and scientists at Johns Hopkins are dedicated to developing important new therapies for urologic diseases. We have, for example, led the world's efforts to diagnose and treat prostate cancer, the most common cancer in American men. We have extensive expertise in a variety of surgical techniques for prostate cancer. In fact, the radical prostatectomy and the more recent, nerve-sparing approach to the same procedure were pioneered here. Thanks in part to advances in computer technology, robotics, telecommunications and endoscopic equipment, we now can apply a variety of minimally-invasive surgical techniques to many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the genitourinary tract. Operations such as the removal of the gallbladder or kidney -- which once required invasive incisions, considerable pain and lengthy hospital stays -- now are being done with minimally-invasive approaches, using novel, high-tech devices and techniques.
