Alcohol and Chemical Dependence Services

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers many avenues of care for people who suffer as a result of alcohol and drug use (whether taken by prescription or on one's own) or from other medical, emotional, behavioral, or social problems related to substance use.

Services include consultation, both inpatient and outpatient detoxification, programs for abstinence, long-term relapse prevention and preventative maintenance programs. We also offer acute and long-term management of those patients with alcohol or drug related disorders and other suspected or confirmed psychiatric disorders.

CLINICAL SERVICES

Outpatient at/near The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Psychopharmacologic Motivated Behaviors (PPMB) Clinic
Director: Alan J. Romanoski, M.D., M.P.H.
Located in the Meyer building of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the PPMB Clinic sees patients for diagnosis, interventions, second opinions, outpatient detoxification, treatment recommendations and all phases of treatment. Follow-up may be provided by the patient's own physician, through referral, or through the PPMB clinic. A report of the evaluation is sent to the referring/follow-up physician. If a referral is needed, we offer recommendations to the patient and their family. Patients are initially seen for 2 1/2 hours or more, often accompanied by a family member. This clinic is staffed by adults psychiatrists specializing in alcohol and substance use disorders. There is often a pre-scheduling period of several weeks for these appointments, which can be made by a family member or a referring professional, but which must be confirmed by the patient. Copies of pertinent medical and laboratory records, or a brief summary of history and treatment are essential for consultation and must arrive before the initial visit.

Contact the Clinic Coordinator, Sandra Hensley, for more information - (410) 955-7011

911 Broadway Center

These include:

  • The Broadway Center - (410) 955-5578
  • The Comprehensive Women's Center - (410) 955-9535
  • STOP (a community education program) - (410) 955-5578

Partial Hospitalization at The Johns Hopkins Hospital

The First Step Day Hospital
This program is available for patients who require a more intensive setting than outpatient treatment can provide. Participants attend the day hospital 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. They sleep in a dorm-style setting near the medical campus. Typically, patients are referred from medical and psychiatric inpatient services within the hospital. However, outside referrals are welcome.

Inpatient Programs at The Johns Hopkins Hospital

The Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU)
Director: Brian D. Poeschla, M.D.
The ITU is a five bed unit providing highly structured, intensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment, crisis intervention, and linkage to outpatient programs with a maximum length of stay of 72 hours. The patient population consists of voluntary psychiatric patients who are medically healthy or stable, who are willing to work towards change rather than just passively accept help, who most often have a diagnosis of substance-induced mood disorder or adjustment disorder.

Psychiatry residents spend one month of their PGY-2 year providing patient care under the supervision of attending psychiatrists. Residents and medical students with special interests in substance abuse are welcomed and encouraged to contact the ITU director for more information.

The Motivated Behaviors Unit (MBU)
Located in the Meyer building, this inpatient unit specializes in the treatment of dual diagnosis cases, primarily major mental disorders co-morbid with substance abuse. The program provides alcohol/drug detoxification and substance abuse treatment concurrent with individualized psychiatric care. The MBU also accepts patients with behavior disorders in other categories such as paraphilias. This service is directed by full-time attending faculty working with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatric residents and other professionals. Planning for treatment after discharge from the hospital is an integral part of inpatient care.
