Geriatric Psychiatry

The Geriatric Psychiatry Service provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for those persons 60 years or older who are suffering from a psychiatric disorder.

 Outpatient Services 

 Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic
The Geriatric Psychiatry clinic offers psychiatric individual and family treatment to patients age 60 years and older. Disorders treated include: affective disorders, dementia, schizophreniform disorder, personality disorders, anxiety disorders and adjustment disorders.

  • The clinic is located in Meyer 144 
  • Patients are evaluated on Tuesdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm 
  • The clinic offers psychiatric treatment to patients following discharge from a hospital and also evaluates new patients for continued follow-up or further referral.

 PATCH Program (Psychogeriatric Assessment and Treatment in City Housing)
Mobile treatment to elderly in public housing; Provides treatment to elderly people with serious and persistent mental illness that live in city housing. Services include: in-home psychiatric assessment and treatment; improvement and coordination of community service; and education to the caregivers about the special needs of the elderly.

Day/Partial Hospitalization

 Geriatric Partial Hospitalization Program
(Geriatric Psychiatry Day Hospital)
Directed by Dr. Susan Lehmann, this eight patient program provides intensive treatment and management to all persons age 60 or older who are suffering from a psychiatric disorder. These disorders include: major depression, manic-depressive illness, anxiety disorders, paranoid disorders, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorders and early dementia with mood and/or behavioral complications. Patients participate in a comprehensive treatment program enables patients to remain independent in the community while receiving active psychiatric treatment.

  • The Day Hospital is located on Meyer 6
  • Hours of operation are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • The Day Hospital offers intensive multidisciplinary psychiatric treatment as a transition from inpatient hospitalization or as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization

Inaptient

 Geriatric Psychiatry Unit
This nine bed unit, located on Meyer 6, specializes in the treatment of medically complicated elderly patients with severe psychiatric affective and neuropsychiatric disorders. Patients have typically failed other inpatient and outpatient treatment modalities and/or have complicating medical conditions that other psychiatric programs can not manage.
