Coming to Johns Hopkins for hospitalization can be a difficult time for everyone involved, especially the family members who need to be close to their loved one. Accommodating everyone during the hospital stay can be a challenge, and an expensive one at that. Johns Hopkins understands these challenges and we have a program designed to help. Whether you’re staying for a few days or a few weeks, our housing program can assist you with your needs.
Some of our procedures only require a short hospital stay between five and ten days. The city of Baltimore has many hotels, and Johns Hopkins negotiates with many of them to provide reduced rates for families of patients under our care: Guest Services at Hopkins provides the best means for reserving hotel rooms and ensuring a reduced, Johns Hopkins rate. The price for a one-night stay ranges from approximately $80-$160. Travel to and from the hotel to Johns Hopkins is easy. Using a taxi is recommended and inexpensive, costing about $5 each way. Guest Services at: 1-800-225-2201 Local: 410-614-1911 The Joanne Rockwell Memorial House and The Hackerman-Patz House offer short-term, or long-term housing options for adults (12 years and older) in a furnished bed-and-breakfast style setting. Both houses are located across the street from the main hospital entrance on Wolfe Street and offer a total of 20 guest rooms. Designed to provide housing for cancer patients and their families, these facilities can accommodate other patients when space availability allows. Nightly rates are $46 with a 10% discount for 30 consecutive days or longer. Patients can secure these accommodations by getting on a waiting list by calling: 410-614-6527.
Depending on the type of treatment needed, some patients and families will need to relocate to Baltimore for several weeks or months. There are many long term leasing options available for accommodations in a furnished town home or apartment. Locations, amenities, and prices are varied. The Children’s House provides a family-centered, supportive residence for children receiving medical care at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Their purpose is to keep families together in the midst of medical crisis and provide mutual support. For more information, please contact: The Children’s House at 410-614-2560. The Ronald McDonald House has been providing “home away from home” guest facilities for families with children receiving treatments at hospitals for over 25 years. The Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore is only a short drive from Johns Hopkins Hospital. Patients ages 21 years or younger and their families are eligible to stay if they are traveling from more than 50 miles away, and have a direct referral. Information: The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Social Work, 410-614-5237 Check with your health insurance company to determine if there is any coverage through your policy for local housing related to your transplant or treatment. As a Johns Hopkins patient or family member, you have access to reduced rates at many local hotels. Consider the special needs of any family members or caretakers who will also need housing. Many lower-cost housing accommodations operate via a “waiting list.” This means that the accommodation cannot confirm a reservation ahead of time; often room availabilities are known as late as the day prior to your arrival. (The sooner you can provide the dates that you expect to need housing, the better the chance you will have in locating a room.) If you are on a waiting list, be sure to have a back-up plan (such as a local hotel reservation). This is important in case the accommodation cannot have a room for you on your requested arrival date. When making any hotel reservations, please be sure to ask about their cancellation policy. If you or someone you will be traveling with requires handicapped accessible housing, please clarify that the accommodation is accessible. Some accommodations do not have elevators or other specific arrangements. Most housing accommodations require guests to be able to independently take care of themselves or have a caretaker stay with them. If you or your family member needs assistance, you may need to have a caretaker stay with you. Each accommodation has specific policies regarding children. If you are looking for a room for you and a child, please be sure to verify the age requirements of each accommodation. If you or your family prefers specific amenities during your stay, be sure to clarify what amenities are offered at each facility. It is important to match what you require with an appropriate facility. Some accommodations may not have daily housekeeping services, restaurants, or concierge services. However, in contrast to hotels, this type of accommodation may be less expensive than a hotel rate. If you have hired a caregiver to assist you while in Baltimore, a separate room may be required. A few accommodations restrict the number of rooms one family can occupy. Be sure to clarify your needs beforehand.
